KONMARI METHOD

KONMARI METHOD *

The KonMari method is a simple but effective organizational system developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese tidying expert. It emphasizes decluttering by encouraging individuals to keep only those items that "spark joy" for them

The process involves several key steps:

1. Tidy by Category, Not Location: Instead of organizing room by room, the method suggests tackling categories of items, such as clothing, books, papers, and sentimental items.

2. The Joy Check: When deciding whether to keep an item, individuals should hold it and assess whether it brings them joy. If it does not, it is recommended to thank the item for its service and let it go.

3. Decluttering First: The method encourages decluttering before organizing, allowing individuals to see what they have and make thoughtful decisions about what to keep.

4. Organizing and Storing: Once decluttering is complete, the method provides specific techniques for organizing and storing items in a way that makes them easily accessible and visually appealing.

The overall goal of the KonMari method is to create a living space that reflects personal values and brings a sense of joy and peace.

Why the KonMari Method?

Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

The KonMari Method encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.

People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.

“Life truly begins only after you have put your house in order.” – Marie Kondo

My procedure for decluttering

Estimated time: this procedure will take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on how much stuff you have.

STEP 1: TAKE EVERYTHING OUT

  • Open every cabinet and drawer.

  • Pull things out and place it in bins or on the floor.

  • Categorize the items and group like items together.

STEP 2: FURTHER CATEGORIZE

  • Within each category, further separate the items.

  • This may involve breaking down larger categories into smaller, more specific groups.

STEP 3:  DECIDE WHAT WHAT TO KEEP AND WHAT TO LET GO

  • Evaluate each item within the categories

  • Ask yourself questions like:

  1. Do I use this?

  2. Does it bring me joy?

  3. Is it functional or valuable to me?

  • Make decisions on what to keep and what to remove from your space.

STEP 4: ORGANIZE

  • Sort the items you’ve decided to keep into specific categories or groups.

  • Choose appropriate storage solutions, such as bins or shelves, for the items.

  • Designate a specific place for each category, ensuring everything has a designated home.

  • Label containers, if necessary, for easy identification and maintenance.

  • Consider establishing a routine for regularly assessing and reorganizing items to prevent clutter from building up again.

This structured approach can help create a more organized and functional space.

A little bit about me…

ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Ana Ines Bonomi, founder of N Joy Home. With a background as a kindergarten teacher, I have transitioned into the world of home organization. I have always considered myself a tidy and organized person, frequently helping friends, family and roommates in organizing their closets and homes. This passion led me to discover my true calling: helping New Yorkers create environments that inspire joy through thoughtful organization and the intentional chosen objects(…)

  • "Ana was professional, friendly, and incredibly efficient. She helped me decluttered my kitchen pantry and created a system that helped me and my husband. Everything has its place now, and cooking has become so much more enjoyable"
